Ethnic Dolls, Oil Painting by Trish Vernazza

My Ethnic Dolls are ones that you won’t find on the shelves of Walmart! A few years ago I received these Muslim styled dolls from a person who knew I appreciated art, crafts and collected interesting dolls. They sat on my art shelf for years staring at me in their plastic boxes. I had never taken the dolls out of their boxes, until a friend and I decided to see the fabrics up close. What a surprise. They were plastic, molded old styled Barbie Dolls, with Yellow Blonde hair, hand painted kookie styled blue eyes, wrapped in these beautiful fabrics. All held together by old rusty pins. I realized how precious they were. Thus began my 6 month process of painting my dolls to come to life.

This artwork was featured/displayed at Mirrors of Mind, Los Angeles, Ca, Psychotherapists as an Artist, 2016.

Girl with Message/SOLD

Girl with Message VCC Lobby

Girl With A Message”, Framed Mixed Media Art: acrylic, graphite, paper, oil pastel, gold leaf, was auctioned to the lucky attendees and benefactors at Oceanside Museum Ball. It was also shown at the Vista Chamber of Commerce 2017: Shades of Red.

This artwork reflects the many messages that girls and women wear on their sleeves. Often times their hopes, goals, desires and daily struggles are tattooed on their bodies demanding our attention. Sometimes we are reluctant to read their messages and engage for the fear of self discovery. Red is a powerful color that demands attention and requires strength to hold it. My girl is NOT going away.

My hidden message is: ????????
